Waterbury, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest town in Hartford County after West Hartford. Waterbury is bordered by East Hartford to the north and east, South Windsor to the south and west, and Derby to the northwest. The first inhabitants of what is now Waterbury were two groups of Algonquian Indians who came overland from Canada during the late 16th century: one group in 1624 and another in 1627. The Algonquians built wigwams on Penobscot Bayou within sight of present-day Waterbury. They also traded with local Native Americans such as the Wethersfield Eels and Wappingers Falls sachem Mattawoman Indian nation for goods such as corn, fish, weapons, dogs and horses. In 1701 John Winthrop founded Yale University on land he had purchased from three villages along Penobscot Bayou near where present-day Waterbury stands. Winthrop's brother John Eliot (1608–79) also played an important role in founding Yale University; he served as its first President from 1565 to 1567 and then again from 1581 to 1585. In 1814 Connecticut became an independent state following its admission into the Union under this new name; as part of that process, it lost some of its easternmost towns including Waterbury which became part ofHartford County. The early settlers did not build permanent homes until they were able to find enough logs or other materials available nearby during construction season or when they could purchase them from forest owners who had Forests Protection Act permits for harvesting lumber Salvage Act permits which allowed them to take building materials away from structures that were no longer being used for housing or other purposes The first post office in what is now Waterbury opened on July 8th 1826 A small store was established about a mile east of where Main Street now stands which was known as "The Post Office" The first schoolhouse was erected next door on Dudley Place (now Dudley Avenue) In 1830 Abraham Lincoln delivered a speech before his students at Old Capitol Schoolroom No 2 located between Main Street AND First Avenue North
