Waterbury is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 381 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Hartford-West Hartford-New Britain metropolitan area. The first European settler in Waterbury was Nicholas Raynolds who arrived on October 15, 1636. He built a cabin on what is now State Street and named it after his home country of England. The town site was surveyed by Capt. John Winthrop in 1647 and platted by Simon Jenney in 1653 as part of theHartford Colony. The name Waterbury derived from an Indian word meaning "water works". Waterbury's first store opened in 1798 and its first school began teaching students in 1801. In 1814, the town became part of the newly created state of Connecticut and changed its name to Waterbury Township. During World War II, water supplies were diverted from the Susquehanna River to provide fuel for munitions factories located in nearby West Haven and New Britain; when those plants closed during the war, Waterbury lost much of its water supply capacity but still had enough left over to provide services to most residents until 1945. From 1916 until 1951, Woodstock Elementary School served as both a high school and elementary school for all grades in Waterbury Township; after that date, it became one grade only at Woodstock Elementary School before being merged with Addison Hills Elementary School into Addison Hills Middle School effective September 1st 2018 The current High School building was completed on June 21st 1962

In 1892, Alfred Smedley bought 1/2 acre (0.24 km²) of land on which he erected a small brick structure now known as Smedley Hall (now occupied by Yale University). On this site Wm Biddle founded Wm Biddle & Sons Clock Company in 1892 which became one of America's most successful clock companies and remains headquartered there today with more than 350 employees across sixteen locations throughout North America including several stores within walking distance of Smedley Hall. The company produced over 100 types of clocks from 1870 until its bankruptcy in 1975 Theodore Roosevelt attended Central High School here from 1907-1909 before attending Columbia College where he received his law degree in 1912 and then began practice as an attorney at Deering & Greenough LLP until 1915 when he served as Assistant Attorney General for Justice underRoosevelt's predecessor Taft..Smedley died suddenly on October 12th 1917 aged 78 years old having been Chairman emeritus since 1922..He bequeathed $5 million dollars to Yale University which has since grown into one of Americas largest endowment programs with over $31 billion being endowed by alumni so far
Waterbury was first settled in 1638 by Rev. John Eliot and his wife, Mary. The town was originally named Wethersfield after the river where it was located. In 1714, Waterbury became a part of Connecticut. It had a population of about 20 people in 1714 and grew to over 100 people by 1800. The town's first school was built in 1753. By 1812, there were schools in every ward in the town and by 1840, all but two wards had schools. In 1868, Waterbury became a part of the newly formed state of Connecticut and it has been an incorporated municipality ever since
