Waterbury is a town in the U.S. state of Connecticut. The population was 10,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford, CT Metropolitan Statistical Area. Waterbury is located on the Mohawk River and has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild to cool winters. Waterbury was founded by Sir John Winthrop in 1630 as a trading post on the west bank of the Mohawk River opposite what is now New York City. The original village was destroyed in 1656 by an Indian raid led by Mohegan Chief Uncas Majoracanachatawa, but Winthrop rebuilt it and named it Waterbury after his home town of Wethersfield, England. In 1812, when Connecticut became a state, Waterbury became one of its first towns and was incorporated as a city in 1824 following approval from its corporate charterholders – men who had vested their property rights in the townspeople through election processes that followed Congregationalist Christianity rather than through purchase from private individuals or development brought about by land speculation during royal rule in Connecticut (the first permanent English settlement outside London). The city's growth continued unabated during slavery until gradual emancipation arrived in 1865; then came rapid growth due to immigration during World War II; and peaked with enrollment (1948) of over 20,000 residents within 2 miles (3 km) of downtown – more than any other municipality in New England before or since.

The first settlers of Waterbury were farmers who arrived in 1784 from England. They built their first houses on what is now Main Street. In 1824, they voted to incorporate as a town and named it after Pottsborough Township in Massachusetts where they had come from. In 1828, they laid out streets and erected schools. By 1830, there were nine churches in the town with over 100 residents. In 1840, when Connecticut became a state following its admission into Union in 1801, Waterbury became one of its six towns within the new state boundaries. It continued to be an agricultural community with small businesses until around 1930 when manufacturing replaced agriculture as the mainstay of local economy. Manufacturing began with shoe production before diversifying into textiles such as clothing and furniture; automobiles were also produced here during this time period (beginning in 1922). However waterjet printing technology led to increased production of products such as paper cups starting about 1960 which continue until present day or are leased out for special events or used for novelty items such as keychains or mugs made from recycled materials like metals found at railway yards across America
