Waterbury's first gunsight was erected in 1790 by Captain John Ferguson. It consisted of a small metal telescope with a convex lens and brass mounts, placed on the roof of the old town hall. The purpose of the gunsight was to allow officers, militia and other Citizens to target their firearms at short range.
