Many of these companies went bankrupt during World War II because manufacturing materials were rationed; however, theirsafes are still extant today and can be found at many retail stores across North America

The first people to live in what is now Waterbury were Native Americans who lived near where the river now flows. In 1764, Samuel Slater settled on an island near modern day Main Street and Park Row; he built a small fort to protect his land from invasions by neighboring settlers. In 1812, General Oliver Hazard Perry landed at Frenchman's Island on which he founded Hartford Naval Yard; as part of this establishment, many natives were recruited for service within its walls. The town of Waterbury was incorporated on April 14, 1814 under Governor Daniel Webster as part of a larger effort to unify Fairfield County into one government under one roof. During World War II (1939-1945), much activity took place at Hartford Naval Yard due to its proximity to Europe; however, it wasWaterbury that played host to America's first airshow when it occurred on July 26th 1942 over Fairfield University’s then new stadium (now home to local high school football). That event—the only time an airshow has been held in central Connecticut since WWII—was headlined by RAF Lancaster bombers over Yankee Stadium and generated great interest throughout New England In recent years there have been several redevelopment projects taking place within Waterbury including: 1) The construction of Town Common which includes a sports complex with basketball court/parking lot and Wellesley School gymnasium; 2) A large shopping mall called “The Commons” located adjacent to Town Common across from Plainville High School; 3) An apartment complex known as "Homespun" which contains approximately 350 villas situated throughout downtown watertown including along main streets such as Market Square and State Street; 4) A substantial renovation/updates project underway for the historic Whipple Mansion located just off North Main Street between Meeting Place Road and Broadway Avenue
