Waterbury, Connecticut is an agricultural town in western Connecticut. It is located on the banks of the River Danube, about 18 miles (29 km) northeast of Hartford and 16 miles (25 km) east of New Haven. As of the 2010 census, its population was 30,827. The name Waterbury is derived from "Wadham" meaning a meadow or place where rangs were put in to tie a ploughshare and "burrow" which means to go over or wander among. The first settler in what would become Waterbury was Nicholas Loveland who founded the town in 1795. The area that now includes Waterbury was first inhabited by Algonquian Native Americans. In 1797, George Washington set out from White Plains with his troops for a military campaign against France but arrived too late to join the battle at Saratoga. Washington's aide-de-camp General Nathanael Greene took command of the army and led it into Canada where he met with French forces under Jean-Baptiste de Montcalm at Queen's Heights on September 11, 1797. After a brief engagement, Washington retreated back up the Canadian border and rearmed at Yorktown before retreating into Virginia on October 12th; this event marked the end of hostilities between America and Great Britain. In 1800 Philip Sidney Cosby started farming near what is now Waterbury along with other settlers including Nathaniel Gibbs and John Dickinson who donated land for development purposes around 1801-02 according to real estate records kept by Lemuel Morris Company Ltd. That same year saw another donation from John Dickinson when he sold his farm two miles north of present day Main Street for $1,500 This purchase established Greenfield as one of waterbury’s leading neighborhoods early in its history By 1810 there were over 140 people living within Edmund Rice’s 2 mile radius extending downriver from Greenfield . According to census data gathered during 1860–1910 many residents had moved away as Hartford became larger thenwaterbury limits . During that time much progress was made in developing waterbury infrastructure such asanking river bank for harboring vessels also new churches were built during this period

Today, Waterbury remains an important center for education; its schools include two universities – Yale University and Smith College – as well as several dozen private colleges and universities acrossHartford Countyand beyond The first permanent Europeans to visit what is now Waterbury were Dutch traders who landed there on July 26th 1635 while looking for fur seals which they found offshore near modern day Wallingford The first English settlers arrived later that year when Nicholas Willoughby led his party upriver from London along the banks of the Raquette Willingham also purchased 2 hundred acres (100 ha) downstream from where he landed for $10 per acre (4 metric tons/ha) The Willoughbys named their land "Watertown" after their home village of Wareham just upstream from where they lived In 1636–37 Isaac Bolte moved his family from Scituate, MA to become one of about fifty Puritan Separatists located around New England under leadership of John Winthrop who chose Watertown as his headquarters because it had good access to fresh water supplies
Waterbury was founded in 1666 by English settlers. The settlement grew quickly and soon became a major center for the fur trade. In 1818, Waterbury became the capital of Connecticut. Today, it is a popular tourist destination with its rich history and interesting architecture.
