Samuel Gridley also erectedthe first store building west of Hartford downtown on Union Street between King and Congdon Streets – later renamed Main Street –in1769 which remains extant as part of Waterbury's historical core today. On July 1st 1801, as part of a larger move throughout the state by the Connecticut General Assembly, Waterbury became an incorporated town with a government consistingof a Mayor/Council and six vote apportioned among them plus three members chosen by freeholders from districts that included parts or all of present-day Waterbury Township; these districts remained until 1938 when they were amalgamated into Hartford Township effective January 1st that year due to population growth rates outpacing those forHartford City center (then known as New Haven), one result being that much older neighborhoods such as Bridgeport/Norwalk were lost entirely to city annexation while newer areas like Milford received only nominal increases in population density making them unincorporated community rather than incorporation status quo pending Town Meeting approval; however both Milford’s ZIP Code 06032 and Bridgeport’s ZIP Code 06000 continue to be registered with the Census Bureau even though they are not considered part ofHartford because they do not contain any populated places within their limits).
