Waterbury's history can be traced back to 1764 when it was named for Colonel George Waterbury and his wife Lady Mary Waterbury. The towns first store opened in 1800. In 1834, the town was incorporated and water supplies were brought in by canal from Derby, Connecticut. The first high school was built in 1868 and closed in 1966; now there are public schools throughout the community which serve students from kindergarten through eighth grade. Waterbury is known for its pottery industry and has been awarded two National Potters' Association awards for excellence in pottery production. Many of the buildings that make up Waterbury's downtown area were constructed between 1840 and 1860 as manufacturing plants for Eastern Potteries (now indux). These include the original courthouse (1860), firehouse (1850), post office building (1856), millinery shop (1854), hotel (1911) and retail shopping center (2005). Today, many of the factories have been replaced by new businesses or demolished to make way for new development within Waterbury limits including two massive housing developments: One on State Street across from Interstate 95/Route 20A near where US Route 6 joins I-95/Route 20A while also stretching across both sides of Route 6 north of downtown; and another on Front Street just east of Main Street near I-95/Route 20A south of downtown – both projects are anticipated to bring over 5,000 residential units over an approximate period of 30 years!

The town's name means "place where water courses through".[1] Waterbury was first settled as part of Hartford Colony in 1664. In 1784, it became part of New Britain Town after its merger with other parts of Hartford Colony. In 1820, Waterbury incorporated as a village and became an incorporated town on December 12th of that year. On February 28th of 1870, Waterbury merged with neighboring Quinsigamond Township forming what is now known asHartford-Quinnipiac Township (formerly called Waterbury-Quincy). On February 14th 1907, the name changed back to Waterbury when Quincy township detached itself fromHartford-Quinnipiac Township to become its own independent municipality again The first white settler in what would become Watertown was John White who arrived in 1664 with his family from England. He purchased land east of present day State Street and began building a cabin which he named White's Harbor after himself and his family’s ship anchored nearby during their voyage home from England

In 1701, the town received its charter from King George II of Great Britain. The first church in Waterbury was built on what is now Market Street in 1727. In 1812, Waterbury became a part of New York State and was renamed Plattsburgh. In 1848, it became a part of Massachusetts and was renamed Worcester. In 1907, it became a city and has been governed by its own municipal government ever since.
