In 1736, another group moved into what is now Waterbury and formed a toll bridge over the Muddy River to connect their new community with Hartford (then just outside of town). This community became known as Newtown because it was located near Newtown Creek. In addition to its water resources, early Waterbury was also well known for its annual fairs which attracted people from all over New England to come see crops and livestock demoed before local investors or government officials. These events are still held today and continue to be an important part of waterbury history.
