Torrington is a town in Tolland County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 12,651 at the 2010 census. Torrington is part of the Hartford-New Haven metropolitan area. It is bordered by Stamford to the north and east, Easton to the south and west, and Willington to the northwest. The first European settlement in what is now Torrington was made on May 10, 1614 when French colonists from Long Island landed there as part of an attempt to settle New England after being expelled from Canada by the British government. The original town was named for Sir John Norris who had served as Governor of Long Island Colony in 1609-1611. The first home built in what is now Torrington was a small cottage called "Norris's Shop" that sat on the northeast corner of Main Street and Beacon Hill Road. A second small cottage, "Finch's Neck", also stood near this location until it was destroyed by fire in 1837. In 1793, settlers from Westchester County began arriving in what is now Torrington and they founded a gristmill which would become one of the most important businesses in town. In 1807, John Amos Silliman donated land along North Main Street for a college which would later be renamed Yale University; however no buildings were erected until 1877 when Yale College moved into its current building on campus across from Town Hall (now Congregational Church). During World War I, many residents took up arms against Germany and joined forces with American forces; some even went so far as to paint their faces blue so they could blend into Allied uniforms better than German soldiers did. Many people who lived through those years are still commemorated today with Veterans Day Parade every year on Memorial Day weekend - something that has been done since 1971! The technological revolution happened during these times too as early computers were born out of necessity during wartime due to rationing; however more importantly almost all telephone lines came online during this time thanks to coaxial cable! One such individual who played an integral role in this era was Samuel Morse who developed electronic communication technology while working at Bell Labs! Despite his early success he eventually lost interest after several years because he realized that telegraphy wasn't going anywhere soon! However his successors continue development today both within Bell Labs as well as other telecommunications companies all over the world!
