The town of Torrington, Connecticut is located in eastern Connecticut and shares borders with Rhode Island to the north, Massachusetts to the east, and New York State to the south. The population of Torrington was estimated at 14,500 in 2010. Torrington was settled by English farmers in 1639 and became a town on May 15, 1807. The first settler in what is now Torrington was John Morse who arrived on July 4th, 1639. The town was named after Sir George Washington’s birthplace, Fairfax County in Virginia. In 1764-65 the legislature granted land to Nathaniel Parker for a church and school system. When this grant was revoked by King George III because of protests from some residents of Providence (Rhode Island) over being given too much land), the legislature passed an act granting six townships or precincts within Hartford County (now Waterbury) to each township treasurer for $5 per head “to be used for education and other public purposes”. This Act exempted Torrington from paying taxes until 1790 when it began paying its own rate as part of Hartford County. In 1813-14 Captain Samuel Weare built one of the first homes in what is now Torrington when he donated land for a military academy known as Yale University which would later become Brown University. The college moved into its current building on Wetherbee Avenue near Second Street in 1879. In 1865-66 Reverend Ezra Stiles founded Congregational Church No 1 which still occupies that location today Borough Hall on Main Street between School Street and Constitution Avenue across from Fenway Park! Reverend Stiles also started First Methodist Episcopal Church west of present day State Road 9 south of US Rte 95! Many people associated with Yale University such as Amos Eaton (1811-1892), Edward Everett Hale (1880-1946), Benjamin Franklin Pierce (1845-1912) attended Congregational services held at First Methodist Episcopal Church starting around 1830 where they met future President Ulysses S Grant during his Harvard presidency! Reverend Stiles served as pastor at First Methodist Episcopal Church until his death in 1907 followed by his son Maxie Stiles who served from 1909 until his death in 2006! Reverend Aimee Manns officiated at Revess' funeral along with her husband Driscoll Manns from Congregational United Churches Unitarian Society congregation which congregation worshiped there until 2002 when their old building burned down!!! In 1872 Colonel Nathaniel Parker sold 2 lots adjacent to Old Saybrook Road leading eastward thence through Killingly Township into Lyme County for $2 per acre payable within 10 years or face condemnation proceedings!! This provided impetus for many landowners west of Middletown Rd ending up owning large tracts extending into modern day Meriden CT including prominent developer Samuel Adams who purchased approximately 105 acres west & NW corner Of Highfield Rd & White Sands Ln just outside Of Norwich Hospital!!! Today many Amish farmers live on these lands making this area one of great historical significance!!!!!!!!!!!!! It should be noted that no real development took place until well after 1910 when Norwalk Hospital opened its doors……….It should also be mentioned that prior toopened its doors Norwalk Hospital had only 5 beds…..TodayNorwalk Hospital has over 100 beds & it remains one of largest healthcare systems downtown!!!! Priorities were indeed different back then!!!!!
The town of Torrington, Connecticut was founded in 1768 by Captain John Glover. The original name for the town was "Wesleyan." In 1812, the town changed its name to "Torrington" after General George Washington's birthplace in Virginia. The town became a state municipality in 1902 and it is now a part of Bridgeport.
