Torrington, Connecticut is a small town in Tolland County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Torrington is located on the western edge of the town of North Haven and is bordered by Watertown to the south and east, Groton to the north and west, and Norwich to the northwest. According to the United States Census Bureau, Torrington has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2 km²), all land. The first permanent European settler in what would become Torrington was Nicholas Easton in 1636. The first permanent English-speaking inhabitant of what would become Torrington was John Byram in 1644. At that time it was part of Groton Township. Torrington became an incorporated village on October 25th 1820 under authority from Tolland Townshend District No 2., which had been created from parts of Watertown Township and Norwich Township.. In 1764 Drury erected a small mill on his farmstead known as "Drury's Mill" for grinding corn flour for local farmers and merchants who used it until about 1800 when it came into operation as an gristmill belonging to Amos Butler & Son Ltd.. It continued production until 1835 when it was replaced by a larger factory built by Samuel Morse & Brothers near present day Main Street and Old Lyme Road.. After years of experimentation with various technologies, Samuel Morse finally perfected his telegraph system here on December 15th 1837 which made this area one of America's leading centers for communication during that time period; however, due to advances in technology over those years there were several major accidents which caused significant damage including a fire at Hartford’s White Sands Mine on November 14th 1847 which destroyed many buildings including mills Queenston had completed some years earlier; also note that this particular mine did not have any underground wire lines at that time! A post office called "Torrington" was established in 1821 (renamed "Watertown" after amalgamation with Groton) under arrangement between New London County - now Tolland County - officials and Drury himself. The village proper formed around this outpost when Major John Hitchcock set up house here about 1830-31AD serving as constable with jurisdiction over all villages within tolland district... In 1840 First Congregational Church building/tower (a granite structure) erected here by Rev David Cranch opened servicesaday following building campaign initiated by Amos Butler... A new schoolhouse (1841) erected adjoining First Congregational Church served grades K-12 through 1957 inclusive... One millrace across stream providing Via Appia access for residents via bridle path passed through village center today before turning northeast toward modern day main street just east side Of old watertown store fronts
