Torrington, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 24,711 at the 2010 census. The Torrington-based company Dynacapital has its headquarters there. The townsite of Newtown and East Lyme are also located in Hartford County. The first settler in what is now Torrington was Nathaniel Morse who founded the village of Newtown on October 5, 1768. Morse's land included most of what today makes up Torrington. In 1834, the first post office was established in Newtown and it remained open until 1860 when it was moved to East Lyme due to population growth in that area. In 1892, dynamite tests were performed near the present day intersection of Main Street and Berlin Road which led to creation of what is now known as dynamite Hill State Park; this location became part of the town limits on December 1st 1896. Dynamite Hill remains a popular tourist spot today for its natural features as well as its history dating back to 1892! On July 1st 1907, an act to merger two towns – Groton and East Windsor – into one municipality called "Hartford" failed by a vote of 3-2 with residents opposing because they felt that they had more rights than their new merged town would have. As a result, on November 6th 1907, Torrington voted to separate from Hartford and become an independent village! This decision made Torrington one of only two municipalities in Connecticut (the other being Danbury) that did not merge during the late 20th century! The first store in the town was built on Front Street. In 1825, a millinery business was established in downtown Torrington and remains active to this day. In 1837, a post office was established in downtown Torrington and has been operational continuously since then. In 1865, an astronomical observatory was opened in downtown Torrington and continues to be used today. In 1978, a new high school constructed in downtown Torrington became one of the first schools in Connecticut to receive state funding under what is known as "No Child Left Behind."
