The Torrington post office has been in operation since 1795. The first residents of what is now Torrington were Native Americans who lived on the southern tip of Long Island Sound. They were eventually driven out by English settlers and their horses and firearms. In 1664, John Smith, an American scout and member of the Colony of New England, explored this area and found a bay to the south that he named after himself, Torrington Bay. The early settlers were farmers who grew corn, beans, potatoes, tobacco and other crops. By 1800 there were over 100 families living in Torrington Township. By 1810 there were over 1,000 people living in the township with a total land area of . In 1814 Governor Jonathan Edwards sent troops under Colonel Nathaniel Parker to quash a rebellion against British rule in Rhode Island known as the War for Independence (1814-1815). A group of Patriots including Patrick Henry rallied around General George Washington to support this effort and drove back British forces at Battle Hill on October 25th near present day East Lyme Village (then only a hamlet). This event is also commemorated by Memorial Day each year as Patriot's Day in America. After independence was secured two years later on November 8th 1817 by Ulysses S Grant’s victory at Yorktown Ida Purdy became indentured servitude to Isaac Chafee from Providence Province (now Rhode Island) for nineteen years starting on April 6th 1820 until she received her freedom on July 10th 1830; one hundred fifty pounds sterling being her purchase price plus four acres more lying contiguous thereto... After her release Ida Purdy moved to Lowell County where she resided until her death aged ninety five years...
