The town was founded in 1798 by Captain John Smith as a stop on his route from Granby to New York City. In 1824 Torrington became a state capital and was renamed by Act of Congress "Johnstown". In 1868 Torrington voted to become an independent city and it remains an unincorporated community today. The first post office opened in Torrington on December 12, 1856. The name for the town changed again in 1907 when it became part of the newly formed city of Hartford; however, Torrington retains its own ZIP code (06520). A number of industries have been located within or near Torrington over the years including clockmaking and watch repair; paper manufacturing including candy canes and Tootsie Rolls; broadcasting services such as WGAB-TV (NBC) and WCVB-TV (CBS); insurance companies such as American State Insurance Company and Hartford General Hospital; auto parts stores such as Auto Supply Centers Corporation; grocery stores including Kroger supermarkets and Easton Farms Market; mattress retailers Sleepy's Bed & Breakfast Inn/B&B Inn, Mattress Warehouse Inc., Comfort Suites by Marriott and Save-A-Lot Markets Inc.; construction materials merchants Home Depot which has its headquarters in neighboring West Haven until 2011, followed by Menard's Supermarkets before that. Torrington also had a significant role during the Second World War with several factories producing wartime munitions like rubber products for planes or tanks or steel for shipbuilding but all production ceased after 1945 due to government regulations required greater efficiency in peacetime production. A few small businesses continued into the postwar period but most closed down early in the 21st century due to economic recession caused by increased competition from online sales sources as well as increased regulation from local governments across North America related to new environmental laws passed during that time called "Clean Air Acts." The closure of many small businesses has led some residents - particularly young people who are often forced out of their homes during economic downturns -to start their own small businesses instead such as providing home care services or food delivery service through mobile app platforms rather than selling goods door-to-door. According to 2000 U.S Census data there were 5,829 people living within the incorporated limits of what is now known as “Torrington” when it became an independent city—the population size remained unchanged between 1990 (5,595) and 2000 (5,829). At this time both Norwalk Town Councilors Gary Jaffa[1]and Rich Hickey represented wards 1 & 3 on behalf Of The City Of Hartford while Mayor Joseph Giannini represented ward 4. Although not contiguous with present day “Torrington”—which comprises largely well off suburbs northeastward along Route 128—the area bounded eastward on US Highway 9 Bypass Road defines much larger portions still considered part OfNorwalk today.

Torrington was first settled in 1664 by Sir John Stonington and his brother-in-law, Samuel Maverick, who founded a small village on the western bank of the Connecticut River. In 1753, when Saybrook became a separate town, Torrington followed suit and annexed part of nearby Lyme Regis. The commercial center of Torrington began to develop after 1800 when it became known as an agricultural center due to its fertile land and good water supply. By 1850, there were more than 50 businesses in town and production had increased to include weaving, cooperage, shoeshine and tanning products. After World War II, industry declined as Braniff Airways discontinued passenger service to Torrington in 1951; however air travel continued until about 1990. In recent years there has been renewed interest inTorrington's history due to its unique place within Connecticut's cultural landscape and its role as an important transportation hub for both rural residents and commuters alike. Several events have taken place throughout 2013 that commemorate local aspects of Torrington's history: In February 2013, Mayor Pedro Abreu convened a public hearing on plans for redevelopment of downtown Torrington which would include demolition or renovation of several buildings dating back to 1892 including The Globe Theatre which had been vacant since 2009; this hearing also addressed concerns about possible negative impacts on adjacent businesses that could be associated with such projects. On July 15th2013 another public hearing was held on similar proposals targeting two buildings at 309 Main Street which date back to 1915 (the old Cannery Building) & 1960 (The Blue Bird School). There were also concerns raised about potential damage done to both structures from heavy rains that year but no decisions were made during these hearings either way unfortunately due largely to lack of community input; while some people are still interested in seeing what happens with these proposals it appears they will not move forward anytime soon given opposition from other businesses nearby who feel their properties may be impacted if redevelopment takes place
