On November 8, 1776, the town of Torrington became the site of the first Battle of Long Island. The British were defending a position on Long Island that they had taken from the Dutch in 1664. The battle was fought between Patriot forces and British regulars. Patriot casualties were high, with over 100 killed and wounded. British General John Burgoyne decided to retreat after this victory.
