It was first settled by English Puritans who arrived during the early 1600s looking for land that they could farm and build homes on. The original settlers were farmers who raised crops and hunted game near what is now known as Route 9 outside of town limits today. As time passed, some more adventurous colonists decided to move into what is now downtown Torrington looking for more fertile land where they could build their own homes orchards or vineyards according to local legend. Today’s downtown is home to many old buildings dating back to before restaurants started sprouting up around here (the first ones being Post Office building at 222 Main Street). One old building that still stands today is First Congregational Church which was built between 1792-1796 on land donated by Amos Kendall Bassett (1677-1745). Another interesting building that you may have seen around town is called “The Clock Tower” which used to be located at 209 High Street next door to Central School until it burned down in 1957! One thing that makes Torrington so unique is how diverse it has become both culturally and economically throughout its years as an independent municipality. With all of its different cultural influences such as Italianate architecture from the 1800s through Polish immigrants who arrived after World War II, Portuguese culture from Brazil during Portuguese rule during colonialism times through Irish refugees who moved here during prohibition times; there are just too many stories about how this small town has evolved into one of Connecticut’s most vibrant communities! Even though it may not always seem like it given how much progress has been made recently towards integrating all aspects of society into one cohesive whole within our community – like when we celebrated our 375th anniversary last year – Torringtons spirit remains strong even today despite all these challenges!

The first permanent European settlement in what is now Torrington, Connecticut was founded by the Dutch in 1624. The town was initially named New Amsterdam because of its location on the new island of Manhattan. In 1784, Torrington became a part of Connecticut.
