Torrington, Connecticut is a town in Windham County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 2,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bridgeport-Stonington-Norwalk metropolitan area. The town was named for Colonel John Torrington, who had settled there in 1638. The first gristmill in the town was built by Nicholas Putnam in 1792. In 1801, a school and church were built and the first post office opened in 1803. The granite quarries that are now responsible for much of the town's infrastructure were developed during the 19th century to supply stone for military and civil projects around Hartford and New York City. During World War II, Torrington became one of many towns throughout Connecticut that received munitions storage facilities from Bethlehem Steel Corporation on Deerfield Road west of downtown. After the war ended, most of these facilities were sold off or demolished but some remain today as part of Blue Moon Lighthouse State Park & Preserve. According to the 2000 US Census Torrington had a population of 1,811 people; however this number may have been higher as some residents did not return to their homes following Hurricane Irene in September 2011 which destroyed many buildings in town including several churches and schools
