By 1865, Colt had become one of the largest manufacturers of firearms in America. And while rifles like the Springfield Rifle continued to be distributed through gun stores throughout Connecticut until after World War II, handguns like the .357 Magnum continue to be popular today.

Torrington is a town in Windham County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford-New Haven-Stonington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Torrington was first settled by English colonists in 1635 and again settlement began in 1724 when Roger Sherman established a trading post on the north side of the Connecticut River. The town was named after General John Torrington who fought against Native Americans during King Philip's War (1675-76). In 1814, Colonel James Wilkinson renamed the town after his father General John Wilkinson who had served as military governor of Canada from 1759 to 1763. The original white settlers were men from eastern England and Ulster who came overland through what is now New York to found their new homes in what would become Connecticut. They were joined by other European immigrants over time, most notably French Huguenots and Germans who had arrived prior to Rhode Island becoming a separate colony in 1660. By 1800, there were 1,500 people living in Torrington and its outlying settlements including strathspeys on both sides of the river. The early years of Torrington’s history were filled with struggle as it competed for access to new land grants that became available along the mountain corridor that formed much of modern day Connecticut. On July 12th, 1635 two small groups of English colonists traveled downriver from Boston following an invitation extended by Governor Jonathan Trumbull to explore lands east of present day Springfield due to increasing Indian activity along this area. The party encountered native warriors while traveling downriver and one group managed to cross over into Indian Territory but all others perished within minutes when they returned upstream las

Torrington is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 14,822 as of the 2010 census. It has been part of the Hartford Metropolitan Statistical Area since its incorporation on April 1, 1998. The first Europeans to visit Torrington were three Dutch traders who came ashore during the 1640s and thought it looked like an Eden or paradise. They named it "Hertogenbosch" (now Holland) after their home country and reported back to their friends that they found a beautiful place with virgin forests and clear streams. The town was platted in 1768 by Peter Stonington, Chief Justice of Connecticut, along with land around New Britain which he had purchased from the Narragansetts in 1749. The town's name is derived from two large trees—the American elm and the red maple—that are located near central square. The first post office was established in 1772; it was renamed Torrington in 1802 after Major General John Torrington, an officer in George Washington's army during the Revolutionary War who later served as governor of New Jersey. In 1814-1815 when war began between the United States and Napoleon Bonaparte's France over control of North America following his victory at Waterloo, many residents chose to leave for Canada rather than fight against French forces occupying Belgium and France. Out of this exodus new settlers were drawn from England who had arrived via ships crossing from Quebec City before Napoleon’s Invasion of Canada on July 4th 1813. Many newigrants left by steamboat down river to Windsor Locks where they boarded wagons for Norwich (now Norwalk). From there they traveled by stagecoach to Amherst where they disembarked at King’s Bridge on October 5th 1816 for what would become known as “America’s First Migration” That same year Congress passed a bill calling for compensation for those Americans who had voluntarily moved westward since President James Kapp’s Executive Order No: 9891 dated November 25th 1800 urged all Americans east of the Mississippi River to Abandon their Opinions & return Home within 7 Years or be driven out into open Wilderness . By January 10th 1817 almost 20% of all male citizens over 21 years old had migrated & about half that number women In 1840 Stephen J* Goudreau started operating Congregationalist church which became known as First Congregational Church Of Torrington In 1850 Rev Dr John E* Wexler officiated services @ First Congregational Churchtorringford but church burned down in 1860 while being used as barn
