The first permanent settler in Torrington was Obadiah Morse who arrived in 1796. Morse built a log cabin on what is today Tyler Street. He and his wife were the first to live in the town. In 1806, Drury and Mrs. John Higginson purchased land south of present day Tyler Street and built a large brick home which served as the town's first meeting hall. In 1830, Amos J flyger sold 2 acres of land northeast ofpresent day Meridian Road to form part of what is now known as Glenbrook Cemetery. On May 10th, 1838, Josephine Atherton married Joshua Biddle at Trinity Church east of present day Main Street. They had two children: Samuel and Martha Biddle Atherton (1839-1929). Joshua died in 1861 and Josephine moved from Torrington to Waterbury after his death to live with her second husband there until her death in 1929.) On October 15th 1870 the village of Torrington merged with Wareham Village to form the newHartford County municipality
The town of Torrington, Connecticut was founded in 1638 by Increase Mather. The town became a county seat in 1701. In 1818, it became a state capital.
