During this time period there were also several important moments in Torrington history which include: 1) The incorporation of the town into the larger city of Norwich through an act passed by the state legislature on September 7th, 1828; 2) The opening of Norwich's first post office; 3) The laying down of street grid system forTorrington; 4) First meeting of local school board (May 10th 1859); 5) Birthdays list for George Washington Carver (July 15th), Horatio Alger (August 2nd), John Phillip Sousa (March 8th), Alice Paul (July 21st).
