Torrington was first settled in 1636 by Puritans who had left England for religious reasons. The first post office opened in 1892. The town is home to the University of Hartford and two hospitals: Hartford-New Haven Hospital and Bridgeport/Westchester Medical Center. In addition, there are several small businesses and 2 parks in the town center including Torrington Park and North End Park.

Torrington is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 7,360 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Hartford Township. Torrington was first settled in 1664 by English colonists and named after the village of Torington in Northamptonshire, England. The town's first store opened in 1792. The present courthouse was built in 1839 and replaced an earlier structure which burned down in 1836. The town became a city on April 15, 1907 when it merged with the neighboring cities of East Haven and West Haven. On July 1, 1928, Torrington annexed the rural part of Southbury to its south and formed a new borough called Southbury-on-Haven with an identical population to that of Torrington but without municipal services or taxing authority. In 1974, Torrington became one of several towns withinHartford County to be made dependent upon state appropriations for their public education; other towns were Rockville Centre (1978), Milford (1983), Glastonbury (1989), Saybrook (1991) and Branford (1994). In 2000, residents voted to secede from Hartford Township over concerns about increased taxes combined with decreased funding levels from the state government. As a result of this vote, Torrington became an unincorporated community once again governed by its own ordinances and regulations as well as by elected officials who are appointed by the township trustees. On November 3rd 2009 Anthony Weiner announced he would be running for Mayor of New York City against then-Mayor Bloomberg; during his campaign website address he mentioned that "Torrington doesn't have someone fighting for them" due to "the lack [of] affordable housing." Weiner won 56% of the vote against Bloomberg's 42%.
The town of Torrington, Connecticut was originally settled by the Hartford Indians in 1636. The name "Torrington" is from the Huron word "tora," meaning "place where there is a stream." When English colonists arrived in the area in 1664, they called the town New Canaan because of its new location. In 1795, Torrington became a part of Connecticut and was incorporated as a city.
