In 1892, Stamford, Connecticut became the first city in the United States to establish a shooting range. The range was located on the east side of town and consisted of three acres. Stephanie K.B. King, a student at the University of Connecticut, researched Stamford’s history and published her paper “Stamford: A History in Focus” in the spring of 2018. In her paper, King discusses Stamford’s history from its founding as a small village to its current location as an incorporated town in Fairfield County. Stamford was founded by Sylvester Stonington on October 1, 1696 as a small farming community located between Hartford and New Haven. The village had only twelve residents when it was first platted and it did not have any roads or schools until 1824. The early settlers were primarily farmers who grew corn, potatoes, beans, fruits, sugar beets and other vegetables for local consumption or export to neighboring towns and villages. By 1800, Stamford had over eighty residents and began to develop into a commercial center due to its location on the Great Housatonic River which provided access to many markets throughout Connecticut and New England. During the American Revolution (1775-83), Stamford played an important role in supporting the Patriot cause by providing food and munitions for the rebels. After the war ended, Stamford continued to grow because of its natural resources such as timber and minerals which made it one of the most prosperous communities in Connecticut during this time period. In 1915, Stamford became part of Fairfield County after becoming separated from Hartfordshire County due to population growth within Fairfield County itself rather than within Hartfordshire County itself (the merger occurred in 1924). At that time, Stamford had a population of over two thousand people with seventy businesses operating within its boundaries! Since then, Stamford has undergone several changes including becoming an incorporated town with a mayor-council system in 2003; being named one of America’s Top Ten Towns for Diversity by Forbes magazine in 2007; being designated as one of Fairfield County’s “Coolest Cities” by Forbes again in 2013; becoming home to Yale University's School of Business Administration in 2015; experiencing significant growth followingHurricane Irene when over one thousand jobs were lost across all sectors including retail; finally experiencing significant economic decline following the arrival of TOURISM during 2016-17 which caused residential property values to drop 50% while job opportunities decreased 25%. However since 2017-18 there has been resurgence with new development along Main Street including numerous new businesses opening up along with increased tourism visitation making strides back into stabilization
