The town of Stamford, Connecticut is home to the largest gun shooting range in the United States. The range was founded in 1907 by two guns dealers, J.H. Eckhart and W.F. Armes. The range has been owned and operated by the Eckhart family since then, and it now occupies more than 5,000 square feet of land inside a former industrial park on the outskirts of town. The range has a history that goes back to 1907 when two gun dealers decided to open up their own shooting ground in Stamford. J.H. Eckhart and W.F Armes were both from Germany and had come to America specifically to start a gun business here; they called their new location “Eckhart’s Gun Shop” after one of their brothers who ran a similar store back home inGermany (Eckhart). The first time anyone shot an animal at the range was on October 10th, 1907 when three dogs were killed with shotguns by Mr. Armes (Wright). In 1924, Mr. Eckhart donated his entire holdings inthe company to the city of Stamford for use as part of its public playground system – this made Stamford one of only a handful cities in America which could offer its citizens access to such an important public resource as a firing range! Over time, the Eckhardts have continued to operate theirrange within what is now known as “The Shooting Complex” which includes two ranges: one for handguns and one for rifles/ shotguns (Glock calibers only). As well as hosting many different types of shoots- ranging from children’s birthday parties down to large military engagements- The Shooting Complex has always been an important part of Stamford life and culture! There are even annual Shootouts at The Shooting Complex which compete against other towns across Connecticut for bragging rights!
