The Old Sturbridge Village Historic District encompasses southeastern sections of downtown Stamford from Water Street eastward to Elm Street and includes many examples of Federal architecture dating back to 1790-1795 including Trumbull's White House which served as President George Washington's headquarters until 1800; State House which housed both government offices and courtrooms during much of 19th century Connecticut history; Custom House built c1787 by Hugh Johnson; John Winthrop's house (now Holy Cross University) also located in this district;Trumbull’s Factory School (now Trinity College), one block south on State Street near present day Spring Street; King’s Chapel completed c1798 on state lot once occupied by Greathouse Tavern where King William III worshipped before he moved his seat from Westminster Abbey after his defeat at Bosworth Field In 1835 local politician Amos Kendall organized a group that purchased 4 blocks south along Indian Path into what is now known as Kendall Square – bounded today by Main Streets: Asylum Road (north), Clinton Avenue (southwest), Beacon Hill Road (east), and Harrison Boulevard (south). This developed into what is now Downtown Stamford with new commercial development beginning with Manufacturers' Row situated along Asylum Road soon followed by other districts such as North Market Square across Orange Alley later still including Midtown Plaza down Broadway towards New Haven Avenue Downtown Stamford experienced significant growth following World War II when thousands poured into the war-time city looking for work opportunities due to rapid industrial expansion throughout central Connecticut consequent increase in population density making possible mass transportation within easy walking distance for most people earning employment at local factories or working at nearby military installations Although extremely diverse racially speaking due largely to large influx African Americans seeking opportunity during wartime years black businesses closed/went out OF Businesses while whiteowned businesses increased significantly overall resulting “Negro Mafia” control over some aspects Of downtown business life while others improved relatively Demographically speaking although rates continue high minority unemployment rates remain elevated especially among lower income families although efforts are being made nationally & locally To reverse trend
