The name "Stamford" probably originated with one of Colt's many enterprises: building a road from New England through central Connecticut (now known as Route 1) across country then selling goods reached by that road back home at high prices to settlers and traders along its route. In 1892-93 Stamford became one of sixteen municipalities withinHartford Township when that township was created from parts of Broome andington townships; it remained an independent municipality until 1959 when it became part of Hartford city government proper. In 1922-23 Stamford voters approved annexation into neighboring Bridgeport because they saw their combined population grow too large for Hartford Township without being able to keep up with its growth rate. In 1959-60 Mayor John Fenton dedicated Stonington Park—owned since 1664 by Sir John Winthrop II—to serve as centerpiece of downtown development which had been planned but not actually built until then when Interstate 95 bypassed town limits making it possible for all six municipalities within Hartford City Limits (formerly called Southfield) to amalgamate under one municipal government under Mayor Edward Moulton’s leadership effective January 1, 1960.] Today Stonington Park forms part of DowntownHartford or I-95 Junction Area served by CT State Police barracks]. As early as 1784 Connnecticut had begun legalizing slavery including free blacks but no slave trade took place between slaves brought overland down river from Africa & America
