In 1639–40, Major Thomas Slocum exploring for London charted the now familiar routes which would lead to New York City through Stamford Prairie; he called this area Northampton Necklace because so many trees grew there near his old home at White Plains Manor (now part of New Haven). In 1814–15 James Millikan opened the first inn west of Boston by erecting a wooden building on Main Street between Washington Avenue and Asylum Street. One hundred years later it still stands as one of downtown Stamford's most popular tourist destinations with its extensive collection of period furniture and artifacts along with an interesting history museum Cellar Door Inn & Tavern offers pub grub or dinner-and-a-game atmosphere complete with live music nightly

On July 14, 1857, a group of men wearing masks and carrying pistols pulled up to the home of Samuel Colt and his son John in Hartford, Connecticut. They announced that they were here to take possession of some arms confiscated from French soldiers. The Colt family was not at home. One of the men then announced that he had been sent by General Ulysses S. Grant to get them. A gunfight ensued, in which one man died and three others were shot. Samuel Colt arrived home with his son and dragged a bloody gun into the house.

Stamford is part of the New England metropolitan area and is bordered by Watertown to the north, Hartford to the east, Westport to the south, and Bridgeport to the west. The first permanent settler in what would become Stamford was Nicholas Ray who arrived on October 13th 1664 from London with his family. Ray had come as a refugee from persecution in England. He built a log cabin near present-day Central Park which served as his home until 1707 when he sold it to Colonel Richard Stonington for $1,000 cash. In 1714 Stamford became part of East Windsor Township when that township was formed from parts of North Branford and South Windsor Townships. In 1815, Stamford became part of Branford Township when that township was created from parts of North Branford and South Windsor Townships In 1835, during construction of US Highways 9 and 10 through central Connecticut, sections of road were cut through what would become downtown Stamford including what are now Callahan Plaza (north), Greenpoint Place (south), Union Square (west) On July 1st 1865 Stamford became an incorporated village under state law with a population of 375 In 1868–69 John Fenton erected an ironclad shipyard on Long Island Sound northeast of town center – now known as Tavern Point State Park In 1886 Stamford City Council established electric lighting system in city hall; new lamp posts were installed throughout downtown In 1898–99 James Auchincloss designed new library building which opened on May 5th 1899 On November 29th 1907 Great Western Railway merged into Boston & Maine Railroad; this made Stamford one track down Broadway between Main Street/Brewster Avenue and Church Street/Washington Boulevard
Stamford was founded in 1599 by the Plymouth colonists as a small trading post on the Connecticut River. The town grew quickly, and by 1650 had a population of around 2,000 people. In 1814, Stamford became the capital of what is now Connecticut.
