Stamford, Connecticut is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 30,913 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford-New Haven metropolitan area. Stamford is one of the oldest towns in the state and was first settled by English colonists in 1664. The name Stamford comes from Stamford Bridge on the Merrimack River. The town was formed on April 12, 1701 as a merger of two other towns: Stratford and New Milford. The original town meeting were held at Greenlawn Chapel which still stands today. The first store opened in 1702 and soon there were several mills and stores in town with a population of 100+. In 1814, Stamford became an incorporated village and remained so until 1899 when it became a full municipality under state law. During World War II, Stamford played an important role as a munitions depot for the war effort supplying both troops deployed to Europe and local civilians who helped produce munitions for Allied forces during the war. Afterwards, many businesses closed down or merged over time creating what is now known as “the downtown shopping district” that hugs Main Street between Washington Boulevard and State Street which dates back to 1916 when developers built what is now called First National Bank building on this space between Washington Boulevard and State Street (now home to Town Hall). Stamford has experienced numerous changes throughout its history including being annexed by Hartford in 1854; becoming part of New Haven after incorporation in 1899; experiencing rapid growth following World War II due to its importance as a munitions plant; culminating with its current incarnation as a municipally-formed city after 1959 when all but three villages within Fairfield County became cities instead of remaining rural communities

Stamford began as a small settlement on the east side of the Shinnecock River in what is now Watertown, and was chartered as a town on July 15, 1823. The first mayor of Stamford was John Cadwell.
