Stamford is part of the Hartford-West Hartford-Easton, CT Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has been around for over 100 years and was named after Stamford Bridge in London. Stamford is located on the west bank of the River Naugatuck from which it takes its name and straddles both banks of the river. It lies about 8 miles (13 km) north-northwest of New Haven and 5 miles (8 km) east of Easton. The first settlers in what is now Stamford arrived in 1736 and were led by Captain John Putnam. In 1762, Colonel Nicholas Campbell erected a grant to 99 acres (40 ha) to Stephen Morse who donated it to the town for public use as an agricultural reserve known as "Putnam's Meadow". In 1814, Stamford became part of Fairfield County when that county was formed from parts of Middlesex and Connecticut. In 1815, Stamford married Norwich, Connecticut with whom he had two children; one son died young while fighting in Mexico during the Mexican–American War and another son joined his father soon after that conflict ended. During this time there were few transportation options between Hartford and other parts of Connecticut so people built their own bridges across the River Naugatuck using logs or wagons pulled by horses or oxen until such time asroads were developed linking Hartford with other towns in central Conn., notably WestHartford and Danbury. In 1821 Stamford obtained a charter from the state legislature authorizing them to lay out streets within their limits This gave rise to what are today Main Street Extension (left), South Broadway Extension (right), Park Avenue Extension (bottom right), North Broadway Extension (top left), Harrison Street Extension (bottom right), Clinton Street Extension - current State House Annexe eastern boundary only (lower left corner near edge of map). There have since been several extensions including: Asylum Road - western boundary; Brookline Boulevard - eastern boundary; Prospect Avenue - southern boundary; Elmhurst Place - northwestern boundaries; Rosedale Boulevard - northern boundaries; North Little Rock Boulevard - eastern boundaries – making total area now well over 2 square miles (). And finally some smaller streets mentioned but not shown on map such as Corner street off Depot road just south side depot lot thence about 1/4 mile away main street extended northerly about 3 rods terminated at junction with larger secondary road running due WNW from depot . . . these small streets are generally unnamed but may be Broadwalk avenue near Village Pump station or High St just outside village limits where US post office used to be located before being moved into new building next door on Melrose avenue ..... These small streets provide excellent clues as to where each development began.. ... Today most residents still live close to their homes with most businesses based out of either their home or local store
