The town was founded on April 14th 1784 by Captain Nathaniel Hawthorne after he bought 5 acres (2 ha) of land southeast of Hartford for $1 (£0.60) per acre. On July 3rd 1801, while still under British rule, General John Putnam organized a militia regiment known as "the Putnams", which became known as "the Stonemasons" after they built their first meeting hall on Meeting Street in present-day Stamford. In 1805 an act changed the name to Stamford; this followed approval by voters of an ordinance changing the name of all towns withinHartford County to honor George Washington during his two presidential campaigns that year. Construction began on the original water works system for Stamford in 1798; this replaced an earlier system that relied upon seasonal rainsfed supplies from hilly areas around Hartford Valley that were susceptible to flooding during wet years. Today's electric lights were installed here in 1895 and are part of downtown Stamford's history along with brick sidewalks dating back to 1814 which still line Main Street today Mayor Edward Munch announced plans for new shopping center development adjacent to Stonington Landing mall thought about since at least 2006 but never completed due largely to opposition from local businesses who felt their livelihoods would be impacted if such development took place near them In 2007 more than $40 million was invested into upgrading facilities including revamping schools and purchasing new equipment including a new library building which opened in fall 2012 . Stamford is one of the oldest towns in New England and has been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Stamford were the Pilgrims who came from Plymouth Colony in 1620. Stamford became a town on April 7, 1814, when it was incorporated as part of Hartford. The first settlers arrived in what is now Stamford during the early 18th century and they were primarily farmers and traders. By 1775, many of the original settlers had moved away to other parts of Connecticut because of religious persecution by British troops stationed there. However, some new immigrants remained in Stamford until after the American Revolution began in 1776. One such immigrant was John Winthrop who arrived here with his family in 1777 and founded Winthrop House Museum which still stands today on Main Street in downtown Stamford. During the Revolutionary War, Stamford sided with Great Britain but later switched sides and helped create America. In 1800, when Yale University was established here, Stamford became its main campus location and it remains so today. Many famous people have lived or worked here including Isaac Asimov (creator of Earthsea), James Baldwin (the author of "The Bell Jar"), Franklin D Roosevelt (Presidential candidate from 1933-1945) and Abraham Lincoln (the 16th President of the United States).
