The city has a rich history dating back to its incorporation as a town in 1837. It was known as "The Hub" because of its strategic location on the junction of three major highways-the Hartford and New Britain Railroad, the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, and the Connecticut Central Railroad. The first Europeans to explore what is now Shelton were Captains John Smith and James Hall who traveled in search of a land route to China in 1624-5. The town was founded by Thomas Goodrich on November 15, 1775 as a place for armed Tories to stay while they awaited transportation back home from Boston during the American Revolution. In 1892, when Railroad Street became Connecticut Route 9 west of Shelton village, residents voted to name it after Samuel Wetheral (1786-1861), an early settler and postmaster in that area who had contributed $2,000 towards construction of the road.

The town began as a small settlement on the southern border of what is now Shelton Township, Fairfield County, in 1814 by two brothers who were among the first Europeans to settle in that area. They named their new community after Sherman Cushing, an American Revolutionary War general. The town grew rapidly during the years following its incorporation in 1825 and reached its peak population of 10,000 in 1850. However, growth slowed during the Civil War and prior to World War I; today Shelton has a population of 3,692. During much of its history Shelton functioned as an unincorporated part of Fairfield County - including serving as county seat from 1825 until 1828 when Bridgeport became county seat. In 1928, however, Shelton voted to become its own separate municipality under state law and remains so today.
