The Shelton, Connecticut mill town of about 30,000 people has been a center for gun manufacturing since the 1700s. In 1846, Samuel Colt began producing pistols in the town. The guns were used by the militiamen during the American Revolution and then by law enforcement in Shelton until well into the 20th century. In 1999, Colt announced that it was selling its assets to Beretta USA. That same year, Sturm Ruger & Co., Inc. (SRR) purchased Phelps Dodge Corporation’s gun-manufacturing business in nearby Ironton for $3 million. As part of its agreement with Beretta USA Ltd., which was first ratified in May 2009 after years of negotiations between SRR Chairman John Browning Jr., CEO Edward Griffin Jr., Sturm Ruger President David Keeney and BerettaUSA Senior Vice President for Sales Ralph Butler III; Rossi Military Industries acquired an eponymous pistol line from Colt Firearms Manufacturing Incorporated that bore no resemblance whatsoever to any existing Beretta products or models produced by Colt Firearms Manufacturing Division within BerettaUSA Ltd.. In 1886, Shelton became one of the initial towns to be served by the Hartford Stage Line railroad which connected Hartford with New York City via Connectierville (now Stamford). Today, Shelton is home to a large number of small businesses including several banks and several grocery stores as well as various other services such as law enforcement and social welfare programs run by state government agencies like Mental Health Services Bureau or Statewide Food Distribution Program

On February 14th 1948, former U.S. President Harry S Truman delivered a speech in which he announced plans for reactor development at Fairfield University in Fairfield County and also proposed that Shelton become one of four towns located within commuting distance of Hartford for nuclear testing purposes only (the others being Westchester County (NY), New York City (NY), and Suffolk County (NY)). This announcement created an uproar among residents and business owners who felt their community would be harmed if their town were ever chosen for such a sensitive project; however Truman's decision stood as Shelton's official position until 1964 when its status changed to unincorporated because of lack of support from either government or resident efforts to change it back. In 1974–1975 duringOperation Neptune's Spear—a NATO operation scheduled to begin on October 20th but postponed due to North Korea’s nuclear weapons program—hundreds of soldiers from United States Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton occupied land near downtown Shelton in order to better defend against possible attack by North Koreans forces seekingTo build airfields inside South Korea so that they could launch attacks against U.S.-held bases there It took many years before things returned normal and people started coming back into their businesses again Today there are many different businesses in downtown Shelton including restaurants Chinese takeout places fast food chains general stores convenience stores hardware stores liquor stores

Shelton was founded in 1640 by the Connecticut River people. The town was named for the Shelton Hills, a large hill located in central Shelton. The community developed around two churches, one of which is still standing and used as a library. In 1824, the town passed an act that allowed for its incorporation as a city.
