There were only five or six families living there at that time. The town began to grow when it became the terminus of a stagecoach line running betweenHartford and West Hartford. In 1836, the townsite was platted and named after Richard Sharpton, one of America's most influential slaveowners and a delegate to the United States Congress from New York City during the early 19th century. Sharpton had originally settled on Newtown Creek where he built his plantation called Mount Zion east of present-day North Haven, CT (now North Branford). He later sold his land to local farmers who developed it into what is now Shelton. One such farmer was John Hennessey who built a sawmill on Streamlined Road in 1872 which became one of Shelton's most important economic engines for many years until it closed down in the late 1990s due to economic conditions within that community as well as elsewhere throughout Connecticut. In 1870, just two years after its incorporation intoHartford County, Shelton voted to annex Winsted and other neighboring villages forming what would become known as "The Farmington Area". This annexation increased population growth by 100 percent due to hunting opportunities available close by; however development stagnated for several decades because not enough people wanted their homes near factories and transportation corridors serving Hartford Airport/Newport News Naval Shipyard/Tomahawk Island Naval Air Station/Waterbury Naval Air Station/Washington Park Golf Course etcetera., making access difficult or impossible without special permits or investments by developers catering primarily to high-end residential areas located outside of town limits - something that never happened with Shelton despite repeated calls from residents over many years for more development within town limits essential for continued vitality and quality of life within our community while also accommodating expanding commuting needs for both locals and commuters who rely on regional bus services approaching town limits including service along Main Street from Waterbury through Bloomfield Avenue then terminating at Rockville Center before continuing through Saybrook all the way back into Hartford proper . A recent example illustrating this problem are plans by two individuals – one based out of Stamford – to build an eight story apartment building next door to First Congregational Church on Middle River Drive adjacent to I-95 Exit 20 (Route 9) – providing no social services whatsoever viz health care inside or outside city limits; no job opportunities viz anything related thereto; no infrastructure whatsoever viz sewer lines connecting properties adjoining church property owner’s house directly across street from school grounds; no streetscape improvements Valhalla Drive extending eastward 2 miles past I-95 Exit 20 have ever been requested or approved by Town officials despite clear requests made numerous times over many years verbally AND IN WRITING !!!! And yet we sit here today discussing potential design features NOTHING HAS BEEN APPROVED OR DESIGNATED AS A FUTURE COMMUNITY PLANNING TOPIC BY THE AUTHORITIES !!!!! Imagine if our Mayor & Town Clerk actually cared about us instead OF THEIR OWN REPORTS THAT SHOW THEM FAILING TO ACT ON MOST ALL CLIMATE CHANGE PROJECT REQUESTS THEY HAVE BEEN MAKING FOR YEARS NOW !!!!!

Shelton, Connecticut is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut. The population was 8,715 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the six towns in Fairfield County and one of the most rural. The town is named for Senator Thomas Shelton (1793-1872) who served from 1849 to 1853 and from 1862 to 1865 as a member of the United States Senate from Connecticut. The first settler in Shelton was John Crouch who platted what would become Shelton on April 10, 1792. At that time there were just twelve families living in what is now Shelton. In 1800, Samuel Morse moved his family to Shelton after settling in Watertown, Massachusetts. Samuel's grandson also settled here and built a house which still stands today on Main Street near Center Road. By 1870, many people had moved into Shelton including Sidney Sayers who organized several small businesses within the community such as saddlers and wagonmakers before becoming president of the First National Bank of Derbyville which opened its doors in 1871. Eventually all but one business closed due to competition from larger banks located further away or because of prohibition laws passed by Congress during that era which made it difficult for small farmers to sell their products unguarded inside their homes In 1916 when World War I began America's involvement in that conflict with Europe resulted in a massive influx of troops and civilians into northeastern Connecticut known as "The Great Migration". Many soldiers brought their families with them with children often staying until they were drafted or released by their unit then moving on back home to start anew As war continued throughout 1919-1920 some men decided enough was enough and started a local militia company known as The Rough Riders under Captain Hiram Jenssen In 1922 when President Warren G Harding was elected America's first female president he appointed Mildred Newbold Wilbur counselor at lawlder public library where she remained until her retirement two years later After world war II ended Americans began returning home again while some decided to stay put while others took advantage of offers available for relocation across state lines During those years much development took place within the confines of what is now ShelTON including: A water treatment plant completed in 1957; an elementary school completed in 1961; an old post office converted into a three story motel/store complex complete in 1975; an industrial parkCompletedin1984that included several manufacturing companiesand two shopping malls; numerous subdivisions developed over time including those housing people with special needs such as autism or Down syndrome; numerous parks have been built around town since then like Oneonta Park Zoo & Aquarium (opened 2001), White Sands Beach State Park (opened 1984), Sturbridge Landing Marina (opened 1989). There are currently plans underway for another water treatment plant(estimated completion 2020) addition to Ansonia Riverwalk & Bike Paths south side making this area one very active commercial district .
