Shelton, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 23,851 at the 2010 Census. It is part of the Stamford–Norwalk metropolitan area. Shelton is located on the eastern edge of the city of Hartford and its downtown is anchored by The Park surrounded by shopping and dining options as well as public transportation connections to other parts of Hartford. The first settler in Shelton was Nicholas Smith who arrived in 1788. A post office was established at Shelton in 1824, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1837, two brothers named John and Joshua Morse bought land near what is now Shelton Center for the Arts from Nathaniel Cook. They built a sawmill there which continued to be operated until it closed in 1925. A railroad station was built at Shelton Center for the Arts on October 25, 1868 by Northern Pacific Railroad officials misled about its real purpose when they announced that it would serve as an interchange for passengers coming from New Haven and Stamford; this station actually served commuters heading east or west to those towns as well as north or south to Norwich (then called Milford). The town came into being on December 1, 1868 when residents voted 3-1 to incorporate under the name "Hartford". Shelton, Connecticut is a town located in Hartford County, Connecticut. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New London–Norwalk-Middletown, CT Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Shelton was John Sutherlin in 1664. The town was organized on February 14, 1784 by act of the General Assembly and named for Colonel Caleb Shelton (1741-1805), an officer in the Continental army who served as major general during the American Revolution and Battle of Bunker Hill. Colonel Caleb Shelton's estate still stands today and is open to visitation. The first store in Shelton opened its doors on Main Street on July 4, 1822. In 1827, a sawmill was built on Flushing Brook; it continued to be operated until 1951. A grist mill also operated in Shelton from about 1837 until about 1840 when it burned down due to faulty construction. In 1861, residents raised money for military purposes with a sales tax hike and voted to incorporate as a town under the name "Hartford". On November 3rd of that year, selectmen reported that they had collected $2,052 from 2% of all property owners within their jurisdiction since October 1st - making Shelton one of the most successful towns incorporation efforts ever undertaken by Hartford County government officials! On December 12th 1861, citizens ratified an ordinance setting up municipal schools and providing for street cleaning; this ordinance remains in effect today! By 1870 there were six stores and ninety-eight families living in Shelton with a total payroll worth $30 per family! The start of World War I spelled trouble for much of America but not for Schelton; troops arrived only on December 15th 1917 when President Woodrow Wilson ordered them into service! On January 6th 1918 local newspapers carried stories announcing that three (3) men from our small town had enlisted with Company D 7th Regiment NY Infantry Battalion at Camp Upton near Boston MA just days before Christmas – proof positive that war had not knocked us down spiritually like so many other places! "We have no idea what we're getting into!" exclaims one resident after learning his son had been drafted into service aged 20 months old just two weeks prior! Many young people enlisted during these years due to feelings of patriotism rather than financial considerations; however some did return home soon after discharge or death certificates stated otherwise(e.g., Hiram Lodge). Atrocities such as this one led some fellow townsfolk to demand more stringent regulation over enlistment practices by both federal authorities and state legislatures... Although World War I did cause great losses among our community’s citizens (& businesses), my father always insists that We laid down our lives willingly & cheerfully & ain’t no “butterfly effect” involved here!" -Linda Hearn
