In 1830, a post office called Stamford was established in honor of General Israel Putnam, who had been killed during the Mexican-American War that year. In 1837–38, Phebe Dodge moved from Norwich to Shelton and started an unsuccessful dry goods store there before opening her own clothing store two years later. That same year saw the founding of what would become one of Connecticut's largest banks – The Hartford National Bank – which became one of the most important institutions in town with its branch locations throughout Shelton and neighboring towns until it merged into JPMorgan Chase & Co., headquartered in Park City, Utah in 2007.
