Shelton is a town in Connecticut, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford-New Haven-Bridgeport metropolitan area. The town was named for Caleb Shelton, an early settler. The first post office in Shelton was founded in 1812 and the first store opened in 1814. In 1827, Shelton had its first school. On December 15, 1861, a fire destroyed most of the town's buildings and killed sixteen people including nine children ages six to ten years old. In 1865, when the US Civil War began, Shelton sent troops to protect Hartford from Confederate forces advancing through central Connecticut. The town also served as headquarters for Union General Jonathan Woodford during his march into New London on July 9–10 1863. In 1907, Senator James Fenton of Connecticut introduced the bill that would name Shelton after him; it passed but never became law due to opposition by local businessmen who wanted to keep their own town's name unchanged. In 1925, Fenton reintroduced his bill and it passed unanimously; this time it became law as "Senator Fenton Day" and has been celebrated annually since then with a parade down Main Street followed by a picnic lunch at Ithaca Park on Sunday afternoon

Shelton, Connecticut is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest town in Fairfield County by total area and the second-smallest by population. Shelton was chartered on April 12, 1796 as part of the Town of Newtown. The first settlers to Shelton were Daniel Hoadley and his wife Elizabeth Cotton from New York City. They arrived on horseback in 1796 and built a small cabin near present day Church Street and Red Hill Avenue. In 1806 Samuel Morse established a post office at what is now known as Main Street and Whitehall Avenue. By 1810 Shelton had two stores, one each for John Dickinson (the founder of Hartford), Elijah Woodbury (a wealthy landowner) and Isaac Stevens (a justice of the peace). In 1813 Hiram Bingham settled in the town with his family from Vermont; he became its first mayor in 1840. In 1865 Shelton's population numbered only 396 residents; it had shrunk to just over 100 by 1870 thanks to waves of emigration from rural towns throughout Connecticut after American Civil War forced Massacres across the border into Canada. However, during much of this time Shelton experienced growth due to its location as an agricultural center surrounded by rich farmland that remained largely unbroken until development began around 1960s when large estates were bought up in eastern ShelTON Township - including some now located within Hartford city limits - culminating with Indian Head Plantation being purchased by Sears Roebuck & Company in 1967 for $1 million becoming one ofHartford's largest ever acquisitions outside Manhattanville borough
Shelton was founded in 1635 by the Rev. Samuel Shelton and his wife, Susannah. The town was named after the Shelton family's home in Derbyshire, England. In 1827, Shelton became a part of Hartford County, Connecticut. In 1892, it became a municipality.
