Shelton is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford–West Hartford–Conn. Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Shelton were Nathaniel and Hanna Smith who arrived around 1785. They were the first white people to live in what is now Shelton. In 1802, John Stevens built a cabin on what is now South Main Street and named it for himself, Shelton being his fathers maiden name. By 1814, there were only four families living in Shelton when President James Ketchum granted a land patent to Isaac Morse for 6 miles (10 km). This area included much ofpresent-day Shelton including parts of Center Road and Broadway Streets as well as present-day North Main Street and East Broadway Street. In 1832, John A Prentice purchased 4 acres (1 km²) of land from George Biddle for $125 ($4/acre). He named it Prentice Place after his father-in-law who had given him this land years earlier while he was still living with his mother at home on Broadwalk Avenue in Waterfordford Township. With this purchase, Prentice laid out streets that would eventually be known today as Main Street (north), Broadway (east), South Main Street (south), West Broadway (west), East Broadway (east) and North Main Street (north). In 1865 the village of Sheltons merged with Fairfield Village to form Fairfield County. The original town meeting held on January 7th convened by Samuel Geddes organized the citizens into nine wards which met monthly until November 10th when they disbanded due to lack of officers or voters but continued meeting informally through correspondence sessions which continued until February 12th 1865 when they again disbanded because no one wanted to pay annual fees for membership in their new county government On December 3rd 1865 an act was passed by the General Assembly granting township status to all those towns within its boundaries which had ratified their incorporation into Fairfield County without ever holding another municipal election or issuing any warrants for such an election . On December 8th 1865 John A Prentice died intestate leaving behind two children viz., Anna Maitland Phelps who became Mrs Fowler and John A Prentice Jr who became Sheriff ofFairfield County According to US Census Bureau estimates from 2000 through 2010, there are 6,574 residents living in Shelton according Asbury Park recorded population of 9 million so it's safe assumption that if you make up your own estimate then its closer to 7000 people
