Shelton, Connecticut was founded by Puritans in 1636. It became a town in 1814 and a city in 1898. The population of Shelton was 5,837 at the 2010 census. The townsite is located in southwestern Connecticut on the Raritan River. It is bordered by Enfield to the north, New Haven to the east, and West Hartford to the south. The first settlers were men from Wales who arrived in 1636. They built their homes on hills overlooking the river valley and set up a trading post near present-day Shelton Center. In 1639, they organized a town meeting which chose a site for their new community on Raritan River flats above present-day Shelton Center. At that meeting, they named their new settlement after Johnathan Sheltonshire, one of their number from Wales who had come to America as part of an English trading party under Captian John Winthrop in 1630. The first store was opened at what is now Main Street in Shelton on December 10, 1636. The townspeople soon built other businesses such as mills and churches along some of its main streets including North Main Street (now Meeting Place Road), Middle Streets (now Church Street), South Main Street (now State Avenue), and Easton Avenue (now Riverside Drive). In 1814, when Shelton became a town it followed the path of many other Connecticut Towns through annexation by West Haven until it reached its current boundaries with Enfield on January 1st of that year. On July 8th of that year it received charter status from Governor Samuel Seward as “the City or County Seat” thereof pursuant to Act 2 Geo 3 c 790″; this act also provided for drainage systems within the limits thereof; these systems having been completed within two years after incorporation…. In 1898 it became a city under Mayor George Waugh following passage of an act entitled “An Act To Authorize The Construction Of A Municipal Building And Other Matters Relative thereto” This act authorized construction of a municipal building at Third and State Avenues which served as both courthouse and government center for all residents within city limits
