Shelton is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 10,721 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford metropolitan area. The first Europeans to reach Shelton were two Dutchmen who sailed up the Connecticut River in 1624 and found a small village called "Shelton" on an island in the river. They named it after their home near Rotterdam, Netherlands. One account says that when they asked the Indian chiefs where they should land for their new colony, they only replied "In Shelton". A Congregational minister from Westchester County served as pastor of Shelton from 1792 to 1807 and then again from 1830 to 1836. He had been sent there by New England Congregationalists fleeing religious persecution in Massachusetts during the time of George Washington's presidency. When Congress passed an act establishing Yale College in 1829, Shelton became one of its constituent towns. The college moved here permanently from Saybrook on October 15, 1830. The town was incorporated on April 20, 1860 under a charter granted by Governor Andrew Johnson; it lost its charter on March 3, 1903 when voters approved a new charter without requiring referendum status because Fairfield County developed other more important towns within its boundaries without any loss of tax revenue (the 1909-1910 fiscal year saw only 1%.).
