Shelton is a town in Connecticut, United States. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford-Newington-Bridgeport metropolitan area. Shelton is located on the north shore of Long Island Sound, about 26 miles (41 km) east of New York City and 23 miles (39 km) west of Hartford. The first Europeans to visit Shelton were Dutch traders in 1624 who named it "Sint Eustatius". The English explorer John Smith found the town in 1634 while exploring the eastern seaboard of North America. In 1784, General George Washington stopped at Shelton for supplies before his march southward through New England. In 1812, general Daniel Boone discovered saltpeter mines near Shelton and named them after him. A post office called Shelton was established in 1819; it closed in 1855. In 1860, three brothers - Edwin Burtons, Willis Burton and Osgoode Burton - founded an unsuccessful attempt to start a cotton gin at what is now known as Factory Point on Long Island Sound. They failed because they did not have enough water access or land to support such a venture; their gin would later become one of the most successful cotton mills on Long Island Sound. In 1865, when Congress passed the Morrill Act creating public universities in all US states except Virginia and Maryland, Shelton became one of its first recipients; it received its first students in 1870. In 1906–07, $2 million was spent to improve infrastructure including new schools and roads; this included money earmarked for Shelton's then-new downtown business district which still stands today anchored by two tall buildings – One Hundred Second Street & Park Row – home to many local businesses that continue to thrive today including: Peddle House Bakery & Cafe Today there are over 150 businesses spanning over six floors with seating for 350 people inside and out! There’s also a large park right outside our door with basketball courts/games/waterpark etc., green space complete with soccer fields/a playground/fishing pier etc., plus private residences within walking distance too!

Shelton, Connecticut is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Haven–Hartford–New Britain metropolitan area. Shelton has been called "The Gateway to the Adirondacks" and has been home to numerous industries including banking and transportation since its incorporation as a town in 1824. The first settler in what is now Shelton was John Woolridge who arrived on horseback in 1795. He built his cabin on the east side of present-day Main Street which he named for his birthplace – Surrey, England. In 1824, Shelton became a town under the name of "Sandwich", after Sandwich, Massachusetts. The original town meeting house still stands today on Meetinghouse Square (now State Street). In 1830, George Davenport founded an insurance company with office space at what is now Park Place and located what is now Town Hall Square (now Elmira College plaza), which became one of the most important commercial corridors in western Connecticut during that time period. His son-in-law Winthrop Channing also founded an insurance company there in 1840; both companies continue to be active today as First American Life Insurance Company and Citizens National Bank of Hartford respectively In 1855 by order of Govt., all towns within Fairfield Co were consolidated into one government entity known as "Fairfield County". At this time Shelton had 9 residents; it had grown to over 20 when it joined the county six years later when it annexed neighboring towns such as Lebanon and East Lyme . By 1870 Shelton's population had reached 30 households with only 2 businesses out of 10 chartered memberships! A new brick courthouse was erected in 1872 following designs by architect Ebenezer Howard; this building still stands today on Union Avenue just north of Main Street corner with West Avenue which once served as its alleyway . During this time period many industry expansions took place including: logging beginning around 1850 followed by manufacturing such as rubber boots/shoes from 1901 until 1957 then vehicle production starting with Ford Model T Production Line beginning 1915 until 1948 ending near current day plant site On July 1st 1922 Congregational Church moved from center square across Abbey Road from old High School to brand new larger facility northwest corner First Baptist Church built southwesterly facing main square where current day Post Office sits 1913 Ahnen’s Drug Store opened east side between Second street & Third avenue circa 1912 “The Three Bears” grocery store opened west side between Fourth street & Fifth avenue circa 1912…many more small businesses dotted around Butternut Squash fields early 1800s through late 1920s This industrial growth spanned several decades despite difficult economic times due largely to lack access to credit especially outside eastern Connecticut during these difficult years
