The original buildings in Shelton were constructed primarily as log cabins with only one or two stories high; these structures still stand today along with many other colonial era relics such as cannons, tools, and furniture that have been preserved throughout the years. In 1875, Shelton became part of the new city of Bridgeport which grew rapidly during the late 1800s due to its location between Hartford and New York City; this growth led to increased demand for housing and businesses within ShelTON walls. Today, there are more than 1,000 businesses located throughout downtown including several banks and restaurants which serve up local cuisine typical of this region including seafood dishes from Hullabaloo Cove Resort & Marina located just across US Highway 1 from downtown Halethorpe Road (Route 128) on the southern edge of town . The name change came about because of the competition of other towns that were established in that area at that time such as East Milford and Norwich. The first settler to arrive in what is now Shelton was John Tryon who arrived on July 1, 1636. Tryon named his new settlement after his friend Sir John Norfolke which he had met while traveling through England. Tryon's farmstead became one of the most important settlements in what is now Shelton due to its strategic location between two major waterways-the Thames River and Putnam Creek. Tryon's farmstead served as a model for later homesteads located around present day Shelton including Hillcrest, Medbury and White Plains; all of which were founded during or soon after the Revolutionary War era. In 1792, Thomas Preble donated land to build a schoolhouse which would serve as the nucleus for what would become Shelton Academy; one of only eight schools built west of New York City during this time period. During World War II, Shelton played an important role within American military forces due to its proximity to Long Island Sound and its ability to provide necessary naval supplies and ammunition via shipping channels along both coasts up until then unimagined by humans orcivilian vessels. After Pearl Harbor attack on December 7th 1941 many residents relocated their homes nearer to UConn campus so they could be closer military personnel based out of Stamford barracks on campus since no other community survived similar devastation withstood Hitachi Zeppelin air raids over midtown Manhattan without being destroyed). After America entered World War II vast numbers more people from all over Eastern Europe had come seeking opportunity under wartime rationing policies which made living conditions intolerable for any sizable number people outside those sections Of Great Britain controlled by Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s government (known informally as “The British Zone”) Germans were among these refugees primarily from Bohemia-Czech Republic (now Czech Republic), Hungary (Hungary), Romania (Romania), Slovakia (Slovakia), Bulgaria (Bulgaria) and Serbia(Serbia).
