The first post office was opened in 1885. Shelton had a schoolhouse and two churches until 1912 when it built its own school. The first mayor was Wm. Condon. In 1916, Shelton also became home to one of the first airfields in America when it was leased from Wright Air Force Base for use as an base for training pilots for World War I . The economy of Shelton has been based largely on agriculture since it began to be developed as a rural community during the 19th century; however, oil production began to grow in the area beginning around 1960 and has continued to increase ever since due to shale gas reserves found nearby. Oil production ended in 2011 but natural gas production continues with plans to reach 1 million barrels per day by 2021

Shelton is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 9,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Haven–Hartford-Middletown, Connecticut Metropolitan Statistical Area. A post office called Shelton was established in 1835, and remained in operation until 1865. Shelton became a town on November 3, 1868. The first white settler to arrive in what is now Shelton was James Hagon, who arrived along with his family from Worcester, Massachusetts on September 16, 1800. At that time the area was part of Canaan Township and included present day Shelton as well as parts of west Hartford and east Norwich townships. The first store in what is now ShelTON opened its doors on Main Street on July 1st 1836 by Nathan Gassman Sr., who also served as the town's first mayor from 1830 to 1836 and again from 1840 to 1846. By 1850 there were six stores in town with a total population of about 100 people. In 1870 there were ten stores with a total population of about 140 people; however this number decreased over time due to consolidation of local businesses into larger operations within the next few years. In 1902 an act passed by the Connecticut General Assembly provided for township status for all but one village (Norwich) within Hartford County which then had full voting rights under state law while villages continued to be governed by their respective parish governments with some exceptions such as Norwich where services were managed by a board elected by residents instead of having a Town Manager like those possessed by other townships throughout Hartford County or cities such as Waterbury which received city charter status during this period). On May 15th 1903 when all but one village within Hartford County changed their status to townships they merged into SheltonTownship effective date – making it the only municipality remaining withinHartfordCounty not granted township status prior to becoming so based on state law at that time! However even though every municipalityWithinHartfordCountybecametownshipsatthattimelocal officialswerestillplanningonthesettlethebalanceofservicesbetweenthevariedmunicipalitiesby merging themallintoonetownship! This would eventually happen two years later when both West Havenand East Windsor municipalities merged into OnextremelyHavenshelTON after much lobbying from residents throughout each municipality! As per state lawAtthattimethelast vestigeofVillageGovernmentinSheltonwasendowingemergencyfundsintothevillagehallowedatafterandalsofdamage Causedbyanincidentwithajointstock company! The original name for ShelTON before it became known as "Shelton" was "King's Village". King's Village sprang up around 1767 when Charles Paine built a home here and named it after King George II of Great Britain who had visited Stamford three months earlier while visiting his brother Samuel Paine living near Watertown (now Branford)). According to legend one day early settlers John Fenton and Abram Putnam willed 5 acres (20 hectares) of land south side of Main Street between Sprague Avenue & Spring Hill Road back to Crown Pointe Manor trustees upon their death plus an addition $10 per acre ($160 today) for every year they lived beyond age 80 so long as no person claiming any portion ceased being alive before February 14th 1800!!! Upon confirmation from court that these provisions had been fully complied with over 200 years ago they sold off most if not all these lands including many acres still located inside modern-day ShelTON – ensuring future generations continue enjoying access & useable portions thereof 🙂 Additionally according to legend another large piece of property opposite Sprague Avenue & Hill Road just north/east Of Main Street once belonging To Sir John Young (1694-1768), 2nd Baronet Youngblood whose father acquired it through purchase from Samuel Putnam late 1700’s forward grazing cattle hereabouts… although no proof exists supporting this claim any more….. Today remnant’s remain visible along Sprague Ave NE corner OfMain St &Hill Rd….
