Shelton, Connecticut is a town in Windham County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford–West Hartford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by English colonists in 1655 and incorporation as a town took place on November 1, 1853. The original name of Shelton may have been derived from the large Shade tree that grew near the original courthouse square. The tree was known for its thick trunk which served as an effective natural screen against diligences and other vehicles travelling on Main Street during the early years of town development. In 1792, one of Shelton's two churches (therigth Presbyterian) moved to Rutlandville after being destroyed by fire which also damaged their building. The second church (Congregational) continued to be built until its replacement was completed in 1929-30 and dedicated as "Church Hill." In 1797, it became one of six towns in Fairfield County to be chartered under the Connecticut Constitution and named for George Washington. The first store opened in Shelton on November 15, 1797. When Connecticut joined the Union in 1801, Shelton became a part of Hartford. In 1915, when Fairfield County was divided into two parts among six other counties within Connecticut (along with Stratford-on-Avon), Shelton remained withinFairfield County until it became its own town on February 14, 1978. The original settlers were farmers who farmed small parcels of land that they cultivated with their hoes and tools; later they built houses and started businesses such as grocery stores and sawmills. By 1841 there were over 100 residents living in Shelton; by 1910 there were only around seventy people living hereabouts because most of the agricultural land had been platted or purchased for development elsewhere.
