The town was first settled in 1736 by farmers and traders from New England. It became a small village in 1847 and a town in 1868. Shelton is named after Oyster Bay, Long Island, which was near where the first settlers made their homes. The townsite hereabouts has been inhabited for over three centuries by people of English, Dutch, Italian and other European descent who have brought many traditions and ideas with them to Shelton. Most notably, they have built churches and schools hereabouts that continue to play an important role in community life today. Theuel Greenough (1720-94), an American Revolutionary War soldier and governor of Rhode Island from 1781-83, arrived in Shelton on September 21st, 1736 as part of an expedition led by General John Stark to establish what would become Connecticut Colony. Greenough had come down from Boston with supplies for his new colony and reported back favorably on Shelton's potential as a site for settlement. He recommended it to Samuel Chase (1696-1764) who ran the Northampton County courthouse at this time; Chase then forwarded letters patent for Shelton to Governor Jonathan Trumbull (1728-1804) on October 12th, 1739.
