Shelton is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 109 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1795 and incorporated as a village in 1824. The name of the town is taken from John Shelton, an early settler who donated land for the village. Shelton is located on the southern border of Hartford and just east of West Hartford. The first documented mention of Shelton is from 1614 when it was called Quitchettichaocum. In 1672, James Loveland described it as "a good place where all manner of corn can be got". By 1824, when Shelton became aVillage, there were only 10 people living there. In that year, one-third of the Village's land was purchased by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail to build their railroad line through Fairfield County which connected with New York City and Boston. In 1875, after years of hard work by many residents including postmaster Moses Hickey, Shelton had its first public appearance when three small bridges were built over White River near present day Manchester Avenue and North Street to connect Shelton with other villages along the railway line. The first mill in what would become Shelton was built on South Main Street in 1909 by Elisha Graves Simonds (1838-1925). One hundred twenty five years later neighboring West Hartford established itself as one of America’s largest manufacturing cities with its own cotton mills producing everything from textiles to automobiles. However, much like other towns throughout America during this time period struggles mounted against economic disadvantage due to population growth rates that outstripped available natural resources; specifically housing development within walking distance or less than 1 km away invariably becoming overcrowded and thus unaffordable for most citizens who could no longer commute daily outside their homes into those same high-density areas now known as downtownHartford or south centralWest Hartford consequently leading to increasingly vacant storefronts or abandoned buildings becoming “ghettoized” areas characterized today by low-income neighborhood residents struggling to maintain essential services such as affordable housing while forced displacement occurs due primarily to increasing crime rates resulting from increased competition for residential property vacated by wealthier individuals unable or unwilling/unable do cope with increased policing costs associated with urban sprawl typified today by Hartford Downtown redevelopment area which although not contiguous nor permanently inhabited constitutes another ghettoization situation existing adjacent thereto characterized currently by high levels of crime rate among inner city community residents engaged in activities providing essential social services without similarly enjoying accessibly safe neighborhoods comprising southwest portion thereof having current commercial center characterizing it as an important urban arts district
