The current name comes from John Shelton's son, John Quincy Adams Shelton, who served as U.S. Secretary of State from 1828 to 1830 and as a delegate to the United States Constitutional Convention in Chicago in 1848. In 1868, Shelton became one of only two towns in Connecticut to be incorporated as an village when it merged with West Norwalk. The economy of Shelton is based on agriculture and manufacturing products such as paper products, footwear, automobiles and parts for other industries. The community has a large military base which houses several helicopters and tanks used for law enforcement purposes. Unfortunately, due to their relatively small size they were unable to penetrate armor like infantrymen did and quickly became obsolescent in comparison to later designs such as machineguns or grenade launchers. However, they did play a key role in destroying German coastal artillery batteries along Normandy’s beaches during Operation Overlord; this helped ensure Allied victory over Germany
On Nov. 14, 1874, a patent was granted to George Washington Richards for an improved type of lighted gun that could be used while the weapon was being fired. This new type of lighted gun consisted of a metal frame with a Fresnel lens at one end and a battery connected to it at the other. However, since then the population has increased again and is now considered an important commercial center in eastern Connecticut.
