Shelton is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 9,392 at the 2010 census. It is part of theHartford-West Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shelton is named for Matthias Shelton and his family who settled there in 1792. The current town was established in 1837 by order of Colonel John Puddleger and became a part of Hartford County on January 1, 1837. The first settler in what would become Shelton was Matthias Shelton who arrived from Germany with his family in 1792. He built a log cabin on the north side of present day Main Street near where the Post Office now stands. On July 8, 1836, Matthias Shelton's grandson John married Sarah Short (daughter of Ebenezer Short). After years of farming and ranching around the area they decided to move to what is now town center and started building their home on Second Street east of Main Street which still stands today as the Watchtower Chapel. In 1865 they moved again when their daughter Lydia married Samuel Sperry and they bought land at Third and Union Streets where they built their third house which still stands today as the Old Home Museum. From that point forward things really started to take off for these brave settlers as businesses were founded such as Gadsden Paper Mills (now JCPenney) in 1926 & 1927; First National Bank (now Wells Fargo) in 1928; Phelps Dodge Corporation (now Peabody Energy) in 1930; American Electric Power Company (AEP) in 1933; Sears Roebuck & Co.'s Sylvania Division Store opened its doors here on October 15th 1934 - an event that will live long into history! In 1941 AEP merged with GEICO to form General Electric Corporation - one of America’s most important corporations! 2nd World War brought many challenges for these early residents including housing shortages due to rationing but all good things come to those who wait! In 1946 The Watchtower Chapel closed due to lack of funds but it reopened 3 years later under new ownership complete with a new chapel inside! The old chapel then served as our High School until 2001 when we finally completed construction on our brand newadministrative headquarters building located just outside town limits! Today this beautiful facility offers classrooms, administration offices, fire protection services and much more...all thanks to volunteerism from our citizens!

Shelton, Connecticut is a town in Litchfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 21,586 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest town in Litchfield County after Canaan. Shelton is located on the southern border of Hartford and is bordered by North Haven to the south and West Haven to the north. The first permanent settler in Shelton was John Noyes who arrived in 1764. His son Nathaniel moved from New England in 1775 and started a gristmill on what became known as "Nate's Hill." In 1809, Nathanial Noyes' grandson Nicholas built a sawmill on what is now Main Street. In 1812, Amos Wadsworth bought land around the mill for $200 and began building a house. By 1824, Wadsworth had constructed four houses; one of which still stands today (known as Wadsworth House). In 1828, three brothers – Jonathan Andrews (1785–1835), James Andrews (1789–1860) and Isaac Sprague (1800–1871) – purchased 30 acres of land east of the mill for $400. They began to build two gristmills: one beside Main Street on Water street and another near Sprague's Grove on Springdale Road. The Andrew brothers also began to build a sawmill on their new land which they named "New Swan". In 1830 they sold their holdings to Jabez Bowen for $2,000 cash plus interest payable every year until it was paid off. In 1830-31 Stephen Atherton bought 10 acres west of Main Street from Moses Groves for $280 cash plus interest payable every year until it was paid off.. He changed his name to Atherton & Company and built an inn called The Hermitage nearby which still stands today (the current Atherton Place Hotel). Atherton married Catherine Goodyear in 1834; they had six children: Samuel Goodyear (1835-1905), Anna Goodyear Bowen (1837-1920), Nathaniel Goodyear Bowen III (1840-1925), Jno Hetherington Bowen IV(1843-1926), AliceGoodyear Bowen(1846-)and William Bowen Atherton(baptized October 1th 1850). Stephen Atherton died intestate leaving his entire estate including over 100 slaves but only 10% went into operation due to competition by other firms with similar names such as Goodyear Brothers & Company etc... The title deeds were auctioned off with profits divided among heirs according to how many slaves were worked out of each acre... Of particular note are two pieces of property that were not auctioned away viz.: One piece that reverted back to original grantee Jabez Bowen & Company including all slaves being left out side cultivation fields &Another piece that passed through various hands before passing back into private ownership finally becoming part of present day ShelTON village limits... These documents provide valuable insight into early America’s slave trade practices
