Shelton, Connecticut is a small town located in the northeastern corner of Connecticut. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford–New Haven, CT-Worthington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shelton was first settled in 1736 by English colonists who named it Northampton after their home county in England. The original courthouse and jail were built in 1810. In 1892, Shelton became a city and has since grown to include nine neighborhoods: east side (Jefferson-Montgomery), west side (Clinton-Woodbury), south side (Norwalk), central business district (West Hartford), northside (Ansonia), and eastern edge (Easton). The town economy is based on agriculture and manufacturing. The most important crops are potatoes, corn, beans, wheat, hay, appleseed oilseed production, eggs and other poultry products; leather tanning; textiles including clothing making; pulpwood lumbering for papermaking; water resources including wells for irrigation and drinking purposes as well as power generation from coal mining operations; light industry including sales of hardware items such as lawn mowers and air conditioners; timber production including sawmill employment with logs exported to mills in other parts of the country. A small amount of retail trade also takes place within the town limits. There are no public schools outside of neighboring towns Jefferson-Montgomery or Clinton-Woodbury which serve residents within Shelton City limits only. Homespun cotton culture continues to play an important role in local life with many residents still spinning their own fabric or using materials found locally such as twigs from trees or leaves from bushes to make cloth kites or hatschetters’ netting products called “dusters” - these accessories can be seen throughout the community both inside homes and out on property where there is cover for webbing between the branches on high branches available all year round! The Main Street Business District has been home to many businesses over the years including two stores, a gas station and several restaurants and cafes. In 2018, the Town Council approved plans for a new high school which will be built on land that was once part of an old dairy farm and will serve students from both Shelton High School and Danbury High School within walking distance of each other. This project is expected to be completed by 2021
