Shelton is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 12,545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shelton was first settled by English colonists in 1636 and incorporated as a town on January 29, 1801. The original name for the town was "Hartford." A post office called Shelton had been established in 1802, and remained in operation until 1959. The townsite of Shelton is located on the north side of the Raritan River just east of Interstate 87 and west of New Britain Avenue. The townsite straddles what was once Indian Path Road (now UConn Street) which ran from Newtown to Hartford; it became part of I-87 when that highway was built across Connecticut in 1964. According to local legend, Chief Sachem Uncas gave his people this land near present day Shelton when they abandoned their home on Mount Hope Farm during the American Revolutionary War. The first settler in Shelton probably arrived via ship around 1636 and named it "Hartford," after England's capital city at that time, London. In 1795, General John Glover erected a fence along what is now Main Street to keep Native Americans out and started marketing land for sale through letters patent issued under colonial rule dating back to 1600 which spelled outgridlevillehaghtontownsettlementcongressionalparliamentaryassemblyandcourtmartialandfirefighters
