At the time it was considered one of the most promising tracts in all of southeastern Connecticut because it included land that would be developmentally rich but also subject to difficult access due to rugged hillsides and deep woods. The Wanamakers were among the first families to move into what is now Shelton from New York City after independence from Great Britain in 1776. They quickly realized that they needed more than just a smallplot for their farmstead; they needed something larger and better situated so that they could develop their land''. In 1865, when Central State College opened its doors in downtown Hartford (the current site), many young men and women coming off college campuses wanted their opportunity to get involved with real life work right near where they lived instead of studying abroad or working long hours away at some exotic location like Europe or South America. Shelton is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 9,890 at the 2010 census. The town was named for John Shelton, an early settler and founder of Hartford. The first permanent white residents in Shelton were Congregationalists from New England who came to the area around 1775 as part of a group seeking religious freedom from Protestant rule. They built homes on the current site of Shelton High School and founded churches there. The first school in Shelton was built in 1797 on land donated by John Weare. In 1807, the town became part of Hartford Township and its first mayor was Nathaniel Hitchcock. In 1814, following the war with Native Americans known as "the War of 1812", Connecticut passed a law providing for charter schools within towns that had been established since 1692 as "Public Schools". This law went into effect on July 1, 1814 and led to the founding of many private schools within towns such as Shelton that continued operation until statehood in 1907. In 1865, when Hartford Township split into two parts – one including Shelton and East Haven – ShelTON remained within East Haven Township until it gained its own town status in 1972 when it annexed parts of West Haven Township along with other nearby townships (e.g., Enfield and Middletown). Shelton's economy is supported largely by manufacturing: It is home to several local companies which produce clocks, watches, bicycles and other items; also produced are soy sauce products made at a plant located east across Route 20 from downtown; commuter rail service stops outside city limits near Cummings Memorial Library; both local paper mills closed down during 2000-2002 recession but have reopened now; new housing developments are being constructed just east of downtown (on land once used for agricultural production) while older homebuilt homes are slowly being replaced with more recent models; some 25% or so workforce employed locally provides most economic stability
